Química del Nalón, S.A., has been developing its business activity, always in the field of chemicals manufacturing and related products, for over 60 years.

Along this time, there have been significant changes in technology, environmental legislation, quality concept and in the market, being all of them emphasized by globalisation of the economy.

In order to adapt to such changes and to compete, it has been necessary to renew the production processes, to incorporate forefront technology, to built up modern facilities, to improve both productivity and costs, as well as to manufacture high quality products.

Química del Nalón, S.A. has developed an intensive R+D+i program whose highlights are:

  • Highly qualified own resources.
  • Projects developed by multidisciplinary teams.
  • A very close cooperation with external research centres and clients as product end users. Química del Nalón,S.A. cooperates, among other institutions, with:
    • University of Oviedo. (Spain).
    • Coal Research Institute (CSIC). (Spain).
    • French Oil Institute. (France).
    • Imperial College of Materials. (U.K).
    • Wroclaw University of Technology. (Poland).
    • University of Leeds. (U.K.).
    • INETI. (Portugal).
    • Carbone Savoie. (France).
    • Morgan Carbon. (U.K.).
    • R&D Carbon. (Switzerland).

All the projects are applied research ones and are related to own products or processes. As a result, Química del Nalón, S.A. has a number of patents among which outstand:

  • Naphthalene refining process.
  • Pitch from anthracene oil.

Awards and Recognitions

The innovation efforts carried out by Industrial Química del Nalón, S.A. in recent years have had a public recognition with the granting of "Technological Innovation Prize" from the Principality of Asturias in 1997, as well as the "Scientific Merit Award" granted by Colegio Oficial de Químicos de Asturias y León (official association of chemists) in 2009.

Technical Assistance is part of R+D+i development. Its objective is to get close to the client, to identify their problems and needs, working to solve them by providing efficient and competitive solutions, which contribute to their further development
